What is Black Philanthropy Month (BPM)
Black Philanthropy Month (BPM), held every August, was created in 2011 by Dr. Jackie Bouvier Copeland and the Pan-African Women’s Philanthropy Network as an annual global celebration of African-descent giving. BPM culminates with a giving day on August 28 initiated by Young, Black and Giving Back Institute to promote financial support for Black-led and Black-benefiting grassroots organizations.
Learn about NGAAP‘s role in elevating Black philanthropy as well as the evolution and expansion of monthlong BPM celebrations worldwide.
What is #BPM2023CLT
#BPM2023CLT is a collaborative initiative led by NGAAP Charlotte to observe BPM, celebrate Black giving, and advocate racial funding equity in Charlotte-Mecklenburg. Throughout August, #BPM2023CLT will encourage and promote community-wide participation that:
- Illuminates fresh stories from Black founders and Black leaders of nonprofits that serve our communities, sharing who they are and why they matter
- Engages community members and nonprofit leaders with a variety of virtual and in-person events to heighten awareness and make connections
- Channels financial contributions and matching dollars to benefit nonprofits with Black founders and Black leadership
- Culminates the monthlong campaign with a concerted giving day on August 28 called CLT Gives Black. In 2023, NGAAP is partnering on Give 8/28, the annual national campaign led by Young, Black and Giving Back Institute (YBGB) to generate financial support for Black nonprofits. Learn more about the significance of August 28 here.
Why #BPM2023CLT
The concept began taking form in 2019 as a part of The Bold Project, which is an NGAAP initiative with Black organizations leading differently. The Bold Project aims to pave a new path, break down barriers and elevate the vision and voices of Black leaders in Charlotte’s nonprofit and philanthropic realm.
Recognizing the importance of cultural competence and representation, being proximate to communities served, and leveling the playing field in philanthropy, NGAAP’s efforts aim to strengthen nonprofits that identify as follows:
- Black-founded: established by a person or people who identify as Black or African American
- Black-led: 50 percent or more of staff leadership and/or board members identify as Black or African American
- Black-benefitting: 50 percent or more of population served identifies as Black or African American
