We’re excited to welcome back to Charlotte A’Lelia Bundles, author of the new book Joy Goddess: A’Lelia Walker and the Harlem Renaissance. It’s the first biography on her great-grandmother and namesake. A’Lelia is a former ABC News executive, Emmy Award-winning NBC News producer, founder of the Madam Walker Family Archives and a member of several nonprofit boards including Harvard’s Schlesinger Library.
Gilded-age heiress A’Lelia Walker—daughter of celebrated philanthropist Madam C.J. Walker— is a fascinating figure whose legendary parties and Dark Tower salon helped define the Harlem Renaissance.
Sign up and attend to receive a complimentary copy of “Joy Goddess” and enjoy a social reception with award-winning pizza and salad from Bird Pizzeria and assorted wine by Black winemakers.
The program also features Charlotte-based creatives Dr. de’Angelo Dia (poet, artist and educator) and John Hairston, Jr. (artist, illustrator, educator), both former members of the God City artist collective, who will share insights on their respective creative pursuits, reflect on their community-rooted work, and offer thoughts on how art can help move us forward.
“Any form of art is a form of power; it has impact, it can affect change – it can not only move us, it makes us move.”
Ossie Davis
