‘Homecoming’ exhibition of The Soul of Philanthropy to honor the generous changemakers giving back in our community

We’re excited to share that The Soul of Philanthropy (TSOP), a powerful national touring exhibit celebrating the rich history and impact of Black philanthropy, is returning to Charlotte! A partnership of NGAAP, Johnson C. Smith University, and Charlotte Museum of History, The TSOP • CLT Homecoming exhibition will highlight the incredible stories of generosity, leadership, and community empowerment.
As part of this celebration, the Steering Committee for the TSOP • CLT Homecoming is launching a special awards series to recognize the outstanding philanthropists—lovers of humankind—making a difference in Charlotte’s Black community. These awards honor individuals who exemplify the spirit of giving—whether through grassroots efforts, significant charitable contributions, or ongoing work to address systemic challenges.
Ten (10) local Black philanthropists within five categories will be recognized at a special event in summer 2025, highlighting the many ways local Black philanthropists uplift and inspire others. Categories for philanthropists include:
YOUTH – Individual under the age of 21 whose giving/service is having an impact on their community.
EMERGING – In recognition of someone who has recently begun their philanthropic journey with passion, clarity, and impact.
VISIONARY– A transformative thinker whose unique vision of giving is changing the Charlotte-philanthropic landscape.
HOMEGROWN – Charlotte-born philanthropist dedicated to improving community in Charlotte-Mecklenburg
BEDROCK – A foundational philanthropist whose generosity of time and resources has impacted a large cross section of our community, motivated others, and serves as an aspirational example for others.
Honorees will also be featured in conjunction with TSOP • CLT Homecoming exhibition at Charlotte Museum of History from July 15 to October 19, 2025.
The TSOP Charlotte steering committee will select honorees based on their volunteer and philanthropic work within the Charlotte area. Please note that efforts primarily tied to employment will not be considered, and committee members are not eligible for awards.
We invite you to nominate someone who has made a meaningful impact in Charlotte’s Black community! This is a chance to shine a light on the unsung heroes, young changemakers, and visionary leaders who are shaping a brighter future for generations to come. Follow this LINK to make your nomination. Submit your nomination before the end of the day on May 26, 2025, which is when the window will close.
Let’s celebrate those who boldly give, lead, and inspire!
